Kaduna to spend N80bn on primary schools

Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State

Kaduna State government will spend N80 billion to rebuild crumbling infrastructure in public primary schools.

Governor Nasiru  El-Rufa’i  disclosed this when he paid courtesy call on the Executive Secretary of Universal Basic Education Commission, (UBEC), Dr. Hamid Bobboyi, in Abuja, yesterday.

“We think that we need about N80 billion to totally rebuild all the congested primary schools in Kaduna State,” the governor said. He said that UBEC’s N1 billion grant to the state would solve enormous problems facing the education sector.

The governor said the state got $350 million loan from the  World Bank as a budget support out of which $100 million would be used for expansion and upgrade of decaying infrastructure in primary schools.

He said another $50 million would be spent on secondary schools rehabilitation and expansion, adding that both projects would start before the end of this year.

He said the state would put the counter-fund in place before receiving World Bank loan.

Responding, Dr. Bobboyi said by improving schools infrastructure in the state, access to basic education would also be increased.
